The Radiation Effects Research Foundation (and its predecessor, the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission) has managed one of the longest and largest epidemiological studies in the world. The study includes high quality dosimetry, mortality and cancer incidence survelliance as well as a clinical component that can monitor morbidities. The study also includes a number of surveys to collect lifestyle habits and activities. The study is prospective in nature, which is costly but allows high quality results with a minimum of bias. Together, these data provide one of the richest collections of epidemiological data anywhere. In my lecture, I will talk about one of the earliest studies that RERF initiated, the study of the children of the atomic bomb survivors, including the history of how the study was designed, early results, and updates of the latest results.
